Bayer Reports Some Yaz, Yasmin Lawsuit Settlements

Filed March 13th, 2012 Laurie

The number of lawsuits filed against Bayer over side effects from their oral birth control products Yaz and Yasmin increased from 6,850 to 11,300 between February 1, 2011 and February 1, 2012. The information was released yesterday.

Yaz, Yasmin and other drospirenone containing contraceptives have been found to cause deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms, blood clots, weight gain, depression, kidney failure, seizures, stroke, heart attack, and death.
Plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. They claim that Bayer knew or should have known, in particular, of the alleged side effects risks and therefore should be held liable for for having failed to disclose them or adequately warn users of Yaz and Yasmin.

Last month, Bayer agreed to settle the claims of 70 plaintiffs at terms and conditions which Bayer considers to be reasonable. The company did not, however, admit any liability. Additional lawsuits are also expected.
Bayer’s global liability insurance program may not be enough or be fully applicable to cover all expenses and potential liability resulting from the litigation.
