Blinding Infections From ReNu with MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solutions Prompt FDA Review

Filed June 6th, 2008 amy

Contact lens solutions linked to potentially blinding infections may finally face come FDA scrutiny, according to a Bloomberg News report. This review comes long after ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution was recalled in 2006 after it was linked to a different type of eye infection caused by the fusarium fungus.

After more than 138 people in 35 states were infected with the water-borne acanthamoeba parasite last year, the FDA reiterated advice that people clean contacts and remove them before showering and swimming. At least 21 cases were linked to Advanced Medical’s Complete MoisturePlus solution, prompting the Santa Ana, California-based company online casinos to recall the product.

Bloomberg reports that the FDA will convene a panel of outside experts June 10 to “discuss general issues” with various lens cleaners and whether new testing or package labeling should be required, according to a notice posted today on the agency’s Web site. The FDA usually follows the advice of its panels, though it isn’t required to do so.
