Dietary supplements containing sildenafil recalled

Filed September 19th, 2012 Joshua Sophy

The makers of the dietary supplement ACTRA-Sx 500 have announced a recall on the product because independent testing of the capsules has determined that they contain sildenafil citrate.

Sildenafil citrate is the Active Ingredient in prescription drugs used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Because dietary supplements are not supposed to contain a pharmaceutical drug or drug agent, the Food and Drug Administration considers them adulterated and illegal to sell until they’ve been approved by the agency.

Supplements containing sildenafil pose serious health risks to people taking drugs containing nitrates. People suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease are likely to be taking drugs containing nitrates.

The recalled ACTRA-Sx 500 supplement is distributed by Body Basics Inc. The company provided the following information about the product included in the recall: ACTRA-Sx 500, is a purple and gold capsule sold in bottles of 5 count with a UPC code of 830733002015.

Body Basics says it had already voluntarily stopped distributing this supplement in November of last year but it may still be available through some of its customers or consumers may still have supplies of it at home. The recalled supplement was sold to independent distributors in the Los Angeles area but was not sold on the Web. Some consumers were able to acquire the supplement through direct sales from the company.
