More Yaz, Yasmin Lawsuits Filed in Federal Litigation

Filed July 27th, 2012 Laurie

More than 70 lawsuits have been filed this month in the East St. Louis federal court in St. Louis, Mo., over the oral contraceptives Yaz and Yasmin. The new complaints bring the total of cases involved in the multidistrict litigation (MDL) to nearly 10,000.

All of the cases were brought by plaintiffs who claim the Yasmin line of birth control caused them to suffer strokes, heart attacks, embolism, clots, and other health problems. The plaintiffs allege that drug manufacturers failed to adequately research their products and concealed the risks of the contraceptives.

Chief U.S. District Judge David Herndon has been overseeing the cases and said earlier this month that cases “have been settling at a consistent rate” and expected the rest to be settled soon.

Settlements in the cases wrapped up so far have averaged about $214,000.
