Mothers Join to File Zoloft Birth Defect Lawsuit

Filed February 16th, 2012 Julie

A St. Louis mom and a group of other women who gave birth to babies with serious birth defects have filed a lawsuit against the makers of Zoloft, claiming the birth defects were caused by them taking the antidepressant while they were pregnant.

According to the complaint, all the women were prescribed Zoloft during their pregnancy in spite of the risks to their unborn babies. The mothers say they were later born with serious birth defects, including heart problems.

The plaintiffs accuse Pfizer of knowing about the dangers associated with the depression drug, and hiding all the information that about those risks. They also say the drug was defectively designed inadequately tests, and lacked the proper warnings about birth defects. Pfizer is accused of negligence, fraud, failing to warn the public, and unjust enrichment. The plaintiffs are seeking more than $200,000 in actual damages, along with punitive damages and court costs.
