Plaintiff Leadership Roles Assigned in Actos Bladder Cancer MDL

Filed March 14th, 2012 Laurie

Parker Waichman LLP’s Jerrold Parker and 18 other plaintiffs’ lawyers have been appointed to key roles by the judge overseeing the lawsuits against Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.’s over its Actos diabetes medication that allegedly caused bladder cancer in some patients. The drug maker is looking at upwards of 10,000 lawsuits that allege Actos causes bladder cancer in the wake of US regulators linking the drug to the disease last year. Jerrold Parker was assigned to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee.

In addition to patients who take Actos facing a greater risk of bladder cancer, the lawsuits also claim that Takeda and co-defendant, Eli Lilly & Co., withheld information about the risk and failed to provide adequate warnings. Actos was pulled from the market in Germany and France last year because of the increased cancer risk. The first hearing on the cases is set for March 22.

The lawsuits have been consolidated in In Re: Actos Products Liability Litigation, 11-2299, U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana (Lafayette).
