Stronger warning needed on dangers of Ciba Vision Clear Care contact lens solution

Filed June 8th, 2012 Laurie

A leading consumer safety group is calling for stronger warnings on the potential side effects and dangers of Ciba Vision’s Clear Care contact lens solution.

According to a report, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices is warning consumers that the often misused unconventional contact lens solution has resulted in a growing number of adverse reaction reports. Most often reported are burning and stinging eyes.

Ciba Vision has updated warning labels on its top-selling lens cleaning solution but ISMP believes the warnings aren’t explicit enough and don’t properly note the dangers posed by Clear Care. Clear Care uses a higher-than-normal amount of hydrogen peroxide in its solution. To neutralize the effect of that, Clear Care is supposed to be used with a specially-designed lens case that contains a built-in neutralizer ring that takes hours to work.

Many of the people who’ve reported burning and itching eyes when wearing contacts stored in this solution likely stored them in a case other than Ciba Vision’s included case.

The Food and Drug Administration has received at least 110 reports of complaints from consumers who blame Clear Care with causing itching an burning eyes. Despite updating the warnings on Clear Care and making more obvious the need to use this solution with its own specialty case, the complaints to the FDA have not stopped.
